Emma’s costume – part 1 (owl hat)

For the past two years that I have had children I have failed miserably at a lot of special events. Halloween is one of them.

It’s not for lack of wanting to but because we were in a constant state of upheaval for quite a while; a lot of things went on the back burner or, when done, were very understated.

For Jacob’s first Halloween he was a monkey. I think we bought his costume in the kids’ PJ department of Wal-mart. He was cute but it didn’t satisfy my creative needs.

Last year we didn’t dress J up as anything. I was 5.5 months pregnant, we were selling the house, and honestly we were just plain broke. Even though he had no idea that he was missing out on anything I was a little sad.

This year I am going all Martha Stewart on Halloween. I making the kids’ costumes!

I am so excited about how the first part turned out! It was just like I had pictured in my head.

For the record, crocheting is NOT like riding a bike. It has been six months since I picked up a crochet needle and it showed! I had to redo this hat four times just to get it sized right!

Ack! She looks so cute in it!

I am going to add instructions for the hat but fair warning – I don’t follow rules I just make things work. This thing is all over the place, haha.

I used a chunky weight alpaca yarn and a K crochet needle.

Owl Hat Pattern:

magic ring, ch 1

Round 1: 10 sc inside of ring.  Pull ring tight.  Join to ch with sl st (10)

Round 2: ch 3, 2dc in each dc, Join to ch with a sl st (20)

Round 3: ch 3, dc in next dc, (2dc in next, dc in next dc) (29)

Round 4: ch 3, dc in next two dc, (2dc in next dc, dc in next two dc) (38)

Round 5: ch 3, dc in next eleven dc, (2 dc in next dc, dc in next twelve dc) (40)

Round 6-9: ch 3, dc in each dc (40)

fasten off and weave in all tails

Earflap:

From final joining space count seven around left.

Attach yarn.

Round 1: ch 1, dc in next 7 st, ch 1, turn (7)

Round 2: 2dctog, dc in next 3 st, 2dctog, ch 1, turn (5)

Round 3: dc in each st. ch 1, turn (5)

Round 4: 2dctog, dc, 2dctog (3)

fasten off and weave in all tails

count 16 st to right from back seem and add second earflap.

I went around in a different color and added a pink boarder. I used a dc st.

Finishing touches:

Using my plastic needle I thread yarn approx 2 in from center to create the tassel ears on either side. They are just yarn threaded and knotted.

Same concept for the ear flap tassels. Thread. Knot at the top. Braid. Knot at the bottom.

I cut the eyes (circles) and nose (rounded triangle) out of felt and tacked it on with embroidery thread and I hand stitched the eyes with reg. black sewing thread.

(size – E is 7.5 mo and the finished diameter is approx. 16 inches)

This is adorable & since we are expecting a new grandchild in November, I want to make it soon! However, I don’t need to use the magic Ring method, which is awesome! Can you start me out the regular way? I always leave a tail so I can oull my circle closed & don’t have the problem of an opening in the top of my pieces. Thank you so much!
